10 Delicious Anti-Cancer Foods You Must Not Overlook


8. Spinach

When you were a kid, you must have seen how spinach makes Popeye strong and powerful. Have you ever wondered if spinach is indeed as nutritious as it is portrayed to be?

Besides its potent anti-cancer properties (because it is rich in chlorophyll, carotene and flavonoids), spinach also has a long-held reputation for increasing power and energy. Containing double the amount of iron as compared to other greens, it is also filled with other important nutrients like folic acid, vitamins B, C and E, calcium and coenzyme Q10 (which has anti-aging properties and helps prevent Alzheimer’s and heart diseases). So, even if you have never loved green vegetables, spinach is one green you cannot afford to ignore if you want to protect yourself from cancer.

For those of you who find this wonder vegetable too green for your taste buds when eaten raw, try cooking your spinach in soups, stir-fired with meat or mixed with other vegetables and fruits in juices.

There are some things to watch out for though. Go for organic spinach if you can, as this vegetable is among the foods on which pesticide residues are often found. And if you have a history of kidney stones or gout, you will have to watch your intake of spinach as it contains purines and oxalates. [1]


9. Turmeric

Love curry? Your curry could be protecting you from cancer, without your knowledge. Provided it contains turmeric.

Turmeric is found to contain the phytonutrient curcumin, which in turn has powerful anti-inflammatory and cancer-inhibiting (at every stage of cancer development) properties. It is also effective in neutralizing many carcinogens. [2].

Besides curry, you could get your daily dose of anti-cancer turmeric by sprinkling its powder over your meat or vegetable dishes like you do with pepper.


10. Yoghurt

Yoghurts are a treat for most. But there are more advantages to eating yoghurt than taste.

Some probiotic species in yoghurt, like the Bifidobacterium lactis, have been found to enhance immunity even in low doses, and neutralize the toxicity of many carcinogens in foods (e.g. excess hormones) and the environment. [1]

In other words, your yummy yoghurt can protect you from cancer, but provided that your yoghurt contains “live active cultures” (as you want the beneficial bacteria to be alive when you consume them), and does not contain artificial colors, flavorings and sweeteners. Go for yoghurt made of organic milk if you can. [1]
