About

Reuben’s story

I was a sickly child. Underweight, practically stick-thin, rather anemic, having persistent digestive issues and often hit by colds, coughs and fevers – literally once every couple of weeks. Pains and discomforts were common, I was not quite sickly enough to be going to hospitals (thankfully), but weak enough to be hampered in my daily life.

Taking western medications regularly in my younger years also weakened me. For example, I remember suffering from gastric attacks after each round of cold or cough medications, and over the years my digestive issues worsened.

At 17, things unraveled, and an unknown but debilitating stomach condition hit – my stomach was in constant pain, I could barely eat properly and had to force my food down at every meal. I slept at 8pm every night with a pillow pressed against my stomach to try and relieve the pain. I was pale, tired, depressed, and my weight plummeted.

Doctors, specialists, drugs, X-rays and scopes provided no answer. My problem was dismissed. “Stress” was always conveniently blamed. But… my main source of stress was my stomach ailment!

What saved me?

Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM for short.

A practitioner got me started on some Chinese herbs and, over the course of a few months, my condition improved, my appetite returned, my weight went back up and I got my life back.

That was my first brush with the shortcomings of allopathic medicine as well as the possibilities provided by traditional and natural healing modalities.

Interesting.

In 2002, a friend of mine, then a young man, was diagnosed with cancer. He survived, thankfully, but that triggered off a lot of reading I did into cancer. Later, in 2005, an aunt and my dad both succumbed quickly to cancer, after undergoing conventional treatment. It was a tough year. I knew my dad was walking toward a death trap, but my efforts to stop him were to no avail. Everything unfolded quickly – he was given 18 months, but lasted barely 40 days upon commencing “treatment”.

From a very young age, I had already doubted this thing called chemotherapy – it just didn’t make sense to me, that we were poisoning people with chemicals and making them suffer to try and get them well. The more I read and learnt, and the more I spoke to people, the more I was enlightened about the cancer industry.

In 2006, I experienced another significant dip in my health. I was tired, had frequent headaches and dizzy spells, plus I discovered a physical abnormality on my body. Those were the impetus for me to learn as much as I could, and to change my lifestyle, quite significantly.

Back in 2001, my mum had passed on after suffering a very sudden stroke; from attack to death, it was less than four days. With the knowledge I have today on natural health, I’m pretty sure I could have prevented or at least slowed the fates which befell my parents.

But life is to be lived forward, and we can only look ahead.

Cindy’s story

I was never a fan of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), having little regard for its many seemingly strange theories and was instead more inclined toward “scientifically-proven” western medicine.

Although I was rather weak, anemic and underweight as a child, suffering from digestive issues at the same time, things really started going downhill when I was about 27.

I paid little attention to my health, neglecting it and that, coupled with work plus family stress, broke the dam and I started to experience numerous detrimental health symptoms.

My immunity took a beating and I suffered from chronic sinusitis, frequently hit by sneezing fits. Conventional medical treatment only managed to stop the sinusitis symptoms for as long as the tablet was effective. Several days later, the symptoms came back.

My digestion worsened as well and I was at times so fatigued I barely had the energy to drag myself around. There were times I would need to take a nap after having a meal.

I also experienced dizzy spells and heart palpitations. And when the body is unhealthy, the psyche becomes unhappy too – I was unusually anxious on a chronic basis and even suffered from some degree of depression.

By chance, a family member recommended a TCM doctor whom she had been seeing for some time. Through many months of conscientious and consistent acupuncture treatment and consumption of Chinese herbal decoctions, my health slowly improved. Instead of being chronically ill, I become well and functional enough to further seek my own health solutions.

My personal experience with TCM’s healing powders also ignited a flame within me. I’m now undergoing formal training in the subject as well as constantly learning about different aspects of natural health, in the hope of helping myself, my loved ones, as well as others.
