Back Pain On Lower Left Side Has Many Causes

When you end up with back pain on your lower left side, you have to start thinking like a chiropractor, doctor or neurologist to determine what is wrong. This helps prevent your mind from going off the deep end where you start thinking that the end is near!

There’s not just one answer to the question of why you have back pain on your lower left side, so the first thing to do is set up a hierarchy in your mind – what are the worst things that can be wrong, and then what are the causes that aren’t so grave?

By ruling out all the worst things that can be wrong, you can help diagnose the issue and be part of the health care team instead of being a mere victim of the pain.

Worst Possible Causes of Back Pain Lower Left Side

Here’s a list of some of the worst health issues that can cause back pain on the lower left side:

1. Pancreas Health Issues

Organs that are called retroperitoneal – meaning they are located more towards the back in the abdominal cavity – will refer pain to the back. The pancreas is one of these organs that will do exactly that. This is not a common cause of back pain on the lower left side.

2. Reproductive Tract Health Issues

When the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, or prostate are diseased, they will give out pain signals that can refer to the back on the lower left side or the lower right side.

3. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

One of the anatomical structures that are in the area of the low back is the colon. It’s also a retroperitoneal organ. Thus, when a person has irritable bowel syndrome, he or she may feel lower back pain on the lower left side or lower right side. The pain comes from pain fibers that start in the colon and emanate out to the body from that location. Generally, if you have this, you’ve been having difficulty for quite a while.

4. Kidney Stones

The left kidney is another of the anatomical structures located in the area of the body where you may end up with back pain on the lower left side. Thus, if you have kidney stones passing down from the kidney, they may activate pain sensations in this area. The difference between this type of pain and other types is that kidney stone pain is nothing less than excruciating. It will drive you to the Emergency Room.

5. Urinary Tract or Kidney Infection

Besides a kidney stone, you could have a kidney or urinary tract infection. Infections in this area cause back pain on the lower left side; however, you have two kidneys, so the pain can also occur on the right side. Urinary tract infections are more common than kidney infections. Kidney infections can be life-threatening.
