Basic Chest Massage With A Partner

Perhaps one of the most overlooked areas when it comes to massage is the chest.

Most people want a therapist to focus on the back or another area that has suffered an injury, but the muscles of the chest do so much work, (including hugging!), and often get no reward.

You may think that because you don’t lift big weights or do push-ups all day that your pectorals don’t need a little attention. Every day activities such as driving, working at a computer or desk, washing dishes – almost everything – requires us to bend forward all day long. These muscles are constantly reaching for things and bringing them close to your body, and you may be surprised how sore these muscles really are once you start giving them some care.

A self-massage on the chest is easy to perform, but it is more effective if you have a partner.
Doing a chest massage has many benefits, from reducing aches and fatigue to increasing circulation and flexibility. It allows your muscles to perform better and meet the demands of daily life. Plus, it feels great.

The muscles involved in a chest massage are the pectoral muscles stretching across the front of the ribcage. Specifically, it is the hugging muscle: it powerfully pulls and rotates the arms towards the center of your body. They can be tender, so a relaxed touch is best.

Preparation for Massage

Have your partner prepare to receive massage by undressing to their comfort level and lying down face up with a light sheet or blanket covering them. Drape the sheet modestly over your partner to cover private areas of course. Both of you should feel comfortable with each other.

Some candles or soft music might be helpful to set a serene mood and allow for deeper relaxation. You may also want to treat other areas of the body in conjunction with the chest massage as well.

Basic Chest Massage

Instruct your partner to breathe deeply while you perform this massage. It is best to use a light massage oil or lotion to facilitate smooth, even strokes. You may add a few drops of your favorite essential oils if you like. Apply a generous amount of massage oil or cream to your hands first to warm it up before applying it to your partner.

1. Begin by standing above your partner’s head and place your hands palms down with fingers pointing towards your partner’s feet. Glide your hands lightly along the chest muscles from the center up to the shoulder area and then back down the center of the chest. Continue in this way with light strokes a few times to open up the muscles a bit.
