Doing A Fasting Cleanse – Benefits And Instructions

Daily life often involves constant introduction of inorganic substances into the body. From food preservatives to byproducts of pollution, the body faces the buildup of many toxins every day.

Because the body must focus on maintaining homeostasis – that is, carrying out the processes that keep the body functioning normally, often it is unable to eliminate these substances. Many people believe that going through a cleanse period – often a fast – allows the body to “take a break” from the work of daily digestion so that the body’s mechanisms for elimination can address waste buildup.

There are many, many different avenues for cleansing. They range from plans that are pre-purchased (and very expensive) to incredibly simple programs based on raw food principles or macrobiotics. Predetermined plans can be helpful for those who have difficulty “sticking to” regimens, or who are unsure of how to proceed in their cleanse.

Alternatively, designing a cleanse that is most appropriate for oneself (in terms of usual eating patterns, personal environment, etc.) has many benefits as well. The underlying principle of a cleanse is to allow the body to “rest”, so focus should be on foods that are very easy to digest. Often, people stick to liquids for this reason. Some foods that are very difficult to digest include dairy products (eggs, cheese, milk, etc.) and meats, and these should be avoided during a cleanse.

Fasting cleanses may involve only water, or water and other beverages, or may be based on intake of a particular liquid concoction.

Master Cleanse

One of the most popular and widely publicized cleanses of this type is the “Master Cleanse.” This cleanse is used for its health benefits, as well as the very common side effect of weight loss, and has received attention due to its popularity with a number of celebrities. The Master Cleanse involves a special drink that should be consumed every 1 to 2 hours. Herbal laxative tea is also recommended, along with a salt water flush in the morning. The recommendations for preparing these follow.

Salt Water Flush
Should be done upon rising
* 2 teaspoons sea salt
* 1 quart lukewarm water
(NOTE: those with heart issues such as congestive heart failure, hypertension, etc. or any cardiovascular history should NOT do the salt water flush as part of this plan.)

Lemonade Drink (Main Drink)
Drink everyone 1 – 2 hours
Purified water should also be consumed in abundance
* 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)
* 2 tablespoons grade A organic maple syrup
* Approx. 1/10 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (a small pinch) (this should be gradually increased as tolerated)
* 10 – 14 ounces purified water
