Drink A Colon Cleansing Tea – Good Herbs For Bowel Detox

Colon cleansing teas are used for a variety of purposes. Sometimes, they are used to prevent and relieve constipation. People use them as weight loss aids. Other people use colon cleansing teas as part of a general wellness program to create optimal health.

All colon cleansing teas have at least one thing in common – they do not clean just the bowel, but the entire digestive tract. The cleansing process begins when you take the first sip of tea.


Some Colon Cleansing Teas are Pure Quackery

There are many colon cleansing teas on the market. Most of them are simply overpriced laxatives which may actually cause unhealthy inflammation of the digestive tract. Many contain stimulating herbs which may speed up your metabolism, giving a false sense of “lightness”. Others contain diuretic herbs which promote temporary weight loss via water loss. Some colon cleansing teas cause diarrhea. If the teas are harsh, they may damage the protective mucosal lining of the digestive tract.

I have seen products touted as having beneficial claims such as “large amounts of gooey thick colon clogging residues are eliminated.” The gooey substance is actually the protective mucosal lining. Removing that lining increases the likelihood of injury and disease to the colon.


Healthy Colon Cleansing Teas

Healthy, inexpensive herbal teas are available which prevent and relieve constipation and promote colon health. The best teas contain herbs which soothe inflamed intestinal tissues, add bulk to the stool, and moisturize the stool. If gentle teas do not work, it may be necessary to add laxative herbs.

Marshmallow root provides bulk and lubricates the stool. It is a mucilaginous herb which offers protective anti-inflammatory benefits to the bowel. Bulk adding herbs and moisturizing herbs are the gentlest herbs to include in bowel cleansing teas. Slippery elm and apple fiber pectin are bulk forming moisturizing herbal foods too. Flax seeds may be added to teas, as can psyllium. I prefer to use them as freshly ground seeds added to yogurt or smoothies rather than teas, however, as they are more palatable that way.

Aloe gel or juice may be added to cooled teas.

Dandelion root is an excellent herb for bowel cleansing. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals. Dandelion works as a bitter herb, stimulating the liver and gallbladder to release bile and stimulate peristalsis, the natural flow of intestinal movements.
