Easy Lower Back Massage Technique

Lower back pain is one of the most common issues, affecting nearly 80% of the population at some time in their lives.

And so many of us just struggle through, not knowing that there are simple massage techniques that can relieve lower back pain safely and effectively.

Although it is wonderful to receive massage from a professional therapist, performing lower back massage at home can be both pleasurable and beneficial. Just because you haven’t been to massage school doesn’t mean you can’t offer healing touch to someone you love. A light, gentle touch done with care is certainly better than no touch at all. We’re human after all.

The causes of lower back pain can be related to a variety of factors. From physical issues like fatigue or injury to emotional ones such as depression and anxiety, it seems the lower back suffers with every stress we face. Pile on top of all that a sedentary job or a few extra pounds and the lower back can become stiff, achy and even out of joint.

When performing lower back massage, you will be working with the area between the ribs and hips. It is important to use light, gentle strokes, avoiding the spine at all times, while only delicately massaging the sacrum area, which is the place where the two sides of the hips come together just above the tailbone area.

For those of you who suffer from mild to moderate lower back pain, a simple lower back massage may be just the thing to relieve tension and soothe sore muscles. Receiving regular massage from a trusted partner may even keep pain away for good. Trust me, your muscles will thank you.

Preparation for Massage

Allow your partner to undress to their comfort level and lie face down with a light sheet or blanket draped over their hips. The room should be warm but not stuffy. Light some candles or play soft music to encourage relaxation and a cozy environment to receive massage.

Warm up a generous amount of massage cream or oil in your hands before touching your partner. Feel free to begin with allover back strokes, or combine this sequence with techniques for other areas of the body as well.

Basic Lower Back Massage

Have your partner take several deep breaths before performing this sequence. It may be comfortable for them to place a small cushion or thin folded blanket beneath their abdomen to increase space in the lower spine.

1. place your hands on either side of the spine with the heels of your hands on the upper hip and fingers pointing towards the head

2. push your hands forward towards the ribs with a light touch and glide them back down towards the hips in one gentle motion; repeat several times
