Exercises For Lower Back Pain – These Tips Could Help

Because a great deal of lower back pain results from strain on the supporting structures of the inferior spine, one of the best, if not the best, remedies for lower back pain is exercise targeted to this area.

Ironically, though certain types of exercise can be quite beneficial in alleviating lower back pain, it can also be its cause.

Weightlifting performed in excess, or without proper form, can cause many complications that result in lower back pain. Failure to use proper form puts the back at risk under any circumstances, but it often does not have noticeable effects unless the weight being lifted is significant. That is, a large number of people do not use proper form whilst working out, though it does not always produce problems in the short-term.

Per our previous discussion of putting the back at risk with improper form, we shall discuss some common situations in which the back becomes destabilized due to improper form.

One of the most common exercises – the crunch or sit-up – is often done incorrectly. Aside from risking spinal misalignment, failure to use the correct form when doing this exercise also means failure to isolate the abdominals, thereby making the exercise significantly less effective. The mistake many people make when doing crunches is that they engage the arms and head too much. As the head is lifted from the ground, its angle should not surpass 45 degrees at most, and the hands are placed behind it simply to support its weight, not as part of the crunching motion.

Another common exercise that can put one at risk for lower back pain is the squat. This is generally more of a concern for men than women, as they are more likely to be performing this exercise with large amounts of weight – thereby exacerbating any potential damage. When the squat is performed, the back is to remain completely straight – there should be no leaning or bending, as this is what destabilizes the spine and results in injury to it or its supporting structures.
