Healthy Liver Diet – Foods To Eat And What To Avoid

Like every other part of the body, the liver needs to be well nourished in order to stay healthy. For most individuals, simply eating a broad range of nutritious foods is adequate.

Organic foods stress the liver the least as they are free from pesticides and other chemicals which force the liver to work harder to detoxify them. Of course, fresh foods which are free from bacterial contamination are essential too.

The liver, the gallbladder, and bile produced by the liver are responsible for the breakdown of fats in the diet. A low fat diet is helpful for most people. A healthy liver diet is generally a diet which is healthy for every part of the body.


Diet for Liver Disease

If you drink alcohol, are on multiple medications, or have been diagnosed a fatty liver, hepatitis, or other types of liver disease, check with your health care provider for specific instructions. However, these are general guidelines which I recommend for people who ask me about what they should and should not eat if they are concerned about the health of their liver.

If you have been diagnosed with a liver condition, you may need to eat a little bit more than most other people. Your body needs the extra calories to heal and to provide the liver with the nutrients it needs to do its job. To calculate the number of calories that you need each day, multiply your weight in pounds by fifteen.

For example, if you weigh 125 pounds, you would require 1875 calories each day. The exception to this is if you have a fatty liver; in that case, weight loss is sometimes needed. Check with your health care provider with any questions which you may have. Most people with liver problems need to increase their intake of protein. This does not apply in late stage liver disease. Fat intake should be sparse for anyone with liver ills.


Protein and the Body

The body needs protein in order to maintain tissues, as well as to create hormones, enzymes and other substances which the body needs to function. Protein helps the body to use fat efficiently. They make antibodies which keep us healthy. Proteins help build the structure of all the tissues of the body, such as hair, nails, skin, eyes, and our organs. Proteins, like other nutrients, provide a vast array of other functions as well.

The liver needs protein in order to perform its many functions. Protein is needed for tissue repair of the liver. Protein helps the liver do one of its main functions – detoxify the body.

The body can manufacture some protein; however, if you have an unhealthy liver, your body may not be able to create proteins well. That is why you may have higher than average needs for dietary protein.
