Herbal Gastritis Treatment – Herbs For Effective Relief

The word gastritis means inflammation of the lining of the stomach.

Most of us have experienced gastritis at one time or another. It occurs more frequently as we grow older, during times of stress, and when we do not eat right. Herbal remedies provide several very effective gastritis treatments.

Put the Fire out Fast

To turn off the burning pain of gastritis, I reach for the mint family. While herbs may be consumed in many forms, when I want relief from gastritis, I want my herbs in a form that is going to maximize their direct contact with my stomach lining. Herbal foods and herb teas are my delivery method of choice.

One of the simplest and most effective teas is mint. I prefer peppermint tea, but some people prefer spearmint. They work differently but both get the job done. See which works best for you. I like peppermint because of the taste, but some people who cannot tolerate peppermint do better with spearmint.

I grow several different mints. One is a wonderful mint called chocolate mint, which is similar in flavor to peppermint, but it grows with a trailing habit rather than an upright one. I simply nibble on a few fresh leaves when may stomach is irritated. If you do not have a fresh plant, make a cup of strong mint tea.

Lemon balm is another member of the mint family which soothes the fire of gastritis. It is a plant that is used to relieve stress and anxiety. If the fire in your stomach is due to butterflies, drink lemon balm tea. It blends well with other mints.

Catnip is a potent member of the mint family as well. It reduces inflammation, and is calming. Catnip is safe for children. It does not taste good however, so I like to combine catnip with other members of the mint family.

Put up a Soothing Barrier

For immediate relief of gastritis, I use herbs which create a thick healing barrier between the stomach and stomach acid. For instantaneous relief of gastritis, my favorite herb is powdered slippery elm. Unfortunately, slippery elm has been overharvested, so I reserve its use for acute situations. My favorite way to take slippery elm is simply to make a thick paste of the powdered root and swallow it, followed by a little peppermint tea. Purchase only organically cultivated slippery elm. Use it as an “emergency” remedy primarily. In the meantime, brew up marshmallow tea for continued use.
