Herbal Home Remedies For Headaches – Herbs For Effective Relief

Headaches are a very common affliction. Herbs may be used to prevent and relieve headaches.

It is important to determine the type of headache before selecting an herbal remedy. Many common types of headaches respond well to home remedies. Migraines, menstrual, stress, and sinus are just a few kinds of headaches which you may relieve with herbs.

Stress Headaches

Stress headaches are characterized by feelings of a tight band around the forehead or neck, and / or tight neck muscles. The pain may be described as steady or throbbing.
Treatment of stress headaches focuses on reducing stress and finding effective coping methods.

Lavender flowers may be made into a compress which is applied to the neck or forehead to enhance relaxation. To prepare the compress, cover one teaspoon of lavender blossoms with one cup of boiling water. Strain the herbs out of the liquid and discard them. Dip a soft cotton cloth in the herb liquid. Apply the cloth, warm or cool as desired, to the head or neck.

Drink Tea to Relieve a Stress Headache

In order to help you relax and take time out for yourself, I encourage that you consume herbs as a tea. Here is a tasty effective recipe that I make using dried herbs:

* 1 teaspoon lemon balm
* 1 teaspoon oat straw
* 1 teaspoon passionflower
* 1 teaspoon rose petals
* 1 teaspoon skullcap
* 1/8 teaspoon orange peel

Combine the herbs. For each cup of tea, cover one teaspoon of the herb blend with one cup of water. Let the tea infuse for twenty minutes with a lid on. Strain out the herbs. Drink the tea warm or cold. Drinking the tea three to four times per day may help promote comfort and relaxation.

If a headache does not respond to the tea, try using three milliliters of valerian tincture three times daily.

Herbs for Migraines

Migraines are often long lasting, intense, one sided headaches. They are sometimes associated with menses. Nausea and vomiting may occur. Pain may be throbbing or constant. Migraines sometimes run in families. Food allergies or specific foods such as processed meats, red wine, chocolate, and some cheeses are common triggers.

I like to use feverfew as a preventative measure and for acute migraine. My preference is to chew one to three fresh leaves three times daily. They are bitter, but quite effective. I do not use the dried herb. If the fresh plant is not an option, then I recommend a tincture made with the fresh plant only. One milliliter three times daily is often effective.

Applying cold compresses of peppermint tea to the forehead sometimes helps. Dandelion leaf can effectively relieve fluid retention and headache pain if migraines are related to menses.
