Nausea is a common malady. It may be due to stomach “flu”, anxiety, overeating, or eating an unhealthy diet. Many other conditions provoke nausea too.

Ginger is a tasty warming herb which has been used since antiquity for the relief of nausea. Modern scientific studies confirm that ginger is an effective remedy for nausea.

I have seen ginger effectively relieve persistent nausea of pregnancy which is a serious condition called hyperemesis gravidarum. It also relieves morning sickness. If ginger is used for morning sickness, no more than two grams of dried or fresh herb should be consumed daily.

While ginger relieves morning sickness and nausea due to pregnancy, its use for the treatment of nausea is not limited to pregnant women. It is a terrific herb for anyone who is nauseated.

Ginger is a wonderful remedy for motion sickness. Between 2 and 4 grams of fresh or dried ginger may be consumed daily to relieve motion sickness and other forms of nausea. If ginger is being used to prevent and treat nausea associated with motion sickness, it should be taken one half hour before departure and then at least every four hours during the journey.

If you prefer to use a tincture, take 1 to 5 milliliters three times daily of a 1 gram: 5 milliliter extract. You may take it in divided doses frequently throughout the day.

Ginger is useful for people suffering from persistent nausea due to chemotherapy or after surgery.

Crystallized ginger is helpful to keep on hand as a tasty nibble for nausea. I used to keep some in a jar when I worked at a college infirmary as it was an excellent remedy for sinus congestion and colds as well as an excellent remedy for nausea.

Most people like the taste of ginger; however, if you or a loved one does not like the taste, do not use it. I only use it in small amounts for children as part of a blend with other herbs as its spicy taste may be too strong for the little ones.

Ginger works directly on the tissues of the digestive tract to reduce nausea. It also prevents messages which signal the feeling of nausea from travelling between the stomach and the brain.
