Herbal Treatment For Lyme Disease – Herbs Which Could Help

Lyme disease has only been identified since the mid 1970s. Since its initial discovery in Connecticut, it has been found on several continents.

Lyme disease is a tick borne bacterial disease. It causes an initial rash, characterized by a bull’s eye lesion. A person with an acute Lyme infection may be pale, very weak and dizzy. Nausea, fever, chills, vomiting, swollen glands, and a sore throat may be present as well.

If the infection is treated early, complete recovery is possible. Conventional practitioners treat Lyme disease with antibiotics. Natural treatments can help to rid the body of infection and build up the immune system.

If treatment is delayed or unsuccessful, the disease may progress. Over the next few months, one sided facial paralysis may develop. Fatigue is great. The heart may be damaged and the immune system, including the spleen, may become diseased. Severe headaches are common during this stage of the illness. Herbs can help to continue to strengthen the body and fight the infection. They may be used to protect the heart and promote comfort.

If the infection continues, crippling muscular and joint involvement may result. Herbal treatments may continue. Herbs may be used to reduce pain and strengthen the musculo- skeletal system.

Herbs to Kill Bacteria

Several herbs destroy the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Herbs prevent the infection from spreading.

Garlic should be consumed regularly. I recommend fresh raw, or lightly sautéed garlic over the commercial preparations for the full antibiotic benefits of garlic. If you are taking blood thinners or are subject to gastrointestinal distress, check with your healthcare provider before consuming large amounts of garlic. Garlic enhances the health of the immune system and protects the heart too.

Goldenseal is an herb which is endangered. I only use it for serious infections, on a short term basis. I consider Lyme disease an adequate reason for using goldenseal. It enhances the health of the spleen.

Only purchase goldenseal from reputable herbalists or herb sellers. Check with the American Herbalist’s Guild for suppliers who sell ethically grown and harvested goldenseal. Goldenseal is very expensive. If you see goldenseal advertised at an inexpensive price, it is not real goldenseal or it has been illegally harvested, often by people who are not knowledgeable about how to preserve the herb correctly.

I suggest using goldenseal tincture. Take one half of a milliliter three times daily for two weeks. It should be taken as soon as Lyme disease is suspected. Do not wait for blood test results if you have had blood drawn before starting aggressive treatment.

Several varieties of echinacea fight infections. I use echinacea angustifolia and echinacea purpurea for infections. Take echinacea tincture with the goldenseal tincture. Use the same amounts for the same two week period of time. Some commercial blends of the two herbs are available. If you use a blend, take one full milliliter of the blend three times daily. Like goldenseal, echinacea is endangered. Purchase organic field grown echinacea only. Echinacea helps the immune system in other ways too.
