Herbs For Headaches – Herbal Relief For Different Types Of Headaches

Headaches are a common ailment that the majority of people have to deal with, often quite frequently. There are many different types of headaches that can appear; often, they are tension, allergy, stress or anxiety and migraine related.

If you are looking for an effective natural remedy with minimal or no side effects, there are some excellent herbs for headaches that can help you with a variety of these conditions.

Herbs for tension headaches

Such headaches are very common. Tension headaches often occur because your neck and jaw muscles tense up and trigger a headache. If you are suffering from tension headache, here are some good herbal remedies to use:

* Peppermint – according to a University of Maryland Medical Center article in 2011, peppermint is a good herb for headache relief. Studies have shown it effectively reduces tension in the head and can quickly reduce pain when applied on the forehead.

* Lemon balm – this is a good herb to use because it reduces stress and anxiety and can thus soothe the tensed muscles in the body.

A Mother Earth News article from 2011 recommends using the following herb combination to help reduce tension headaches:

* 2 oz each of dried skullcap, lemon balm, vervain, chamomile and holy basil.

* Place them onto a muslin cloth and tie them together. Soak this mixture in your warm bath water and stay there for 15 minutes to release the tension headache.

If your tension headache is caused by stress and anxiety, you can also try this treatment recommended in the same article:

* 1 teaspoon each of dried lemon balm, rosemary, clary sage, lavender, St John’s wort and borage mixed into 5 cups of boiling water.

* Place the herbs in your kettle, pour boiling water on top and let it stand for 10 minutes. Drink the tea multiple times a day to relieve your stress and headache.
