Home Remedies For Allergy Relief

Allergies are a result of complex reactions between your body and offending allergens. An effective allergy treatment plan comprises many aspects. Let’s look at some actions which you can take at home to prevent and relieve allergies.

The most important thing that you can do is to determine what you are allergic to and avoid the offending substance. Depending upon what you are allergic to, you may or may not be able to avoid the allergen completely.

For example, if you have a food allergy, the answer is to avoid eating the food. However if you are allergic to molds or pollen, complete avoidance is impossible.

Dealing with Food Allergies

If food allergies are suspected, but not identified, omit the foods that you think you may be allergic to from your diet. Foods which are most likely to cause allergic reactions include dairy, wheat, yeast, seafood, caffeine, eggs, nuts, soy, sugar, strawberries, and citrus.

Reintroduce those foods back into your diet one at a time. Write down how you feel as you begin eating the foods again. If you determine that you are sensitive to a certain food, eliminate it from your diet for two months. Try to eat it again at that time. If a reaction recurs, eliminate the food again. You may be able to consume the food in small amounts several days apart. This is called a rotation or elimination diet. Do not try to reintroduce foods which provoke severe allergic reactions. Use this technique only for foods which cause minor distress such as stomach irritation, nasal congestion, nausea or headaches.

Importance of a Healthy Diet

What ever type of allergy you have, it is essential that you eat a healthy diet to build up the health of your immune system. Include foods that are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. Sweet potatoes, brown rice, winter squash, and cooked green or yellow vegetables are excellent choices. Most dark green leafy vegetables except members of the cabbage family are well tolerated too. Fruits, except citrus, pineapple, and strawberries are usually well tolerated. Be sure to wash produce carefully to avoid exposure to pesticides and other toxins.

Organic foods are less likely to cause a reaction. Read labels on packaged foods to look for hidden ingredients.
