Home Remedies For Ear Infections

Your ear has three compartments – the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.

The small bones of the ear are located in the middle ear. The eardrum is in the outer ear. The inner ear is responsible for converting sound waves into nerve impulses. The nerve impulses then are sent to the brain.

How You Get Ear Infections

In order to get an outer ear infection, you need to pick up the infectious organism through water such as a swimming pool or through trauma that breaks the tissues.

To get a middle ear infection, you need an infection in the throat or nose. A middle ear infection is accompanied by diminished hearing, the sense that your ear is full, an earache and fever. It can spread to the inner ear and then cause dizziness, fever, nausea and vomiting, and loss of hearing.

Another way to get an inner ear infection is through a meningeal infection spreading to this area.

How to Treat Ear Infections at Home

Ear infections can be treated similar to other infections by working on improving the diet:

* Increase the amount of protein in the diet so your body will have every chance it needs to fight the infection.

* Take more vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin D3. Whenever there’s a fever, your needs for vitamin A and C rise. A good dosage might be 50,000 IU vitamin A, 2000 mg vitamin C, 400 IU vitamin E, and 10,000 IU vitamin D3.

Garlic

For years, herbalists would use garlic for ear infections. They would snip off the sides of a clove of garlic, wrap it in gauze and insert it in the outer part of the ear. They would cover the clove with another piece of gauze and leave the garlic in the ear for several hours. It’s the volatile oils found in the clove of garlic that penetrate the tissues and cause the infection to flee.

Another way to do this is to use garlic oil. Place a few drops of warmed garlic oil directly into the outer ear. Then pack a cotton ball in the ear. Do that a few times a day when there’s an infection. The precaution is to not use this method if there’s a perforated eardrum. When there’s a perforated eardrum, we never want to add any liquid to the ear, as it could potentially infect the inner ear.

Mullein Oil

Mullein oil may also be used. Here’s the method: Add a few drops of warm mullein oil to the ear three times daily. It’s that simple. However, there’s a precaution. Don’t use this remedy if there’s a perforated eardrum.

Probiotics and NAC

Acidophilus and other probiotics will always help to restore normal flora in the body so a capsule daily is always recommended.

The nutritional supplement NAC, which stands for N-acetyl-cysteine, can help remove an accumulation of fluid in the ear, according to the book, Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, written by Burton Goldberg.
