How To Stop Diarrhea Using Herbs And Herbal Remedies

Herbs provide rapid relief when diarrhea strikes.

Many of the herbs used to stop diarrhea also stop symptoms which often accompany diarrhea, such as nausea and abdominal cramps. Other herbs are used to eliminate organisms which cause diarrhea.

Some herbs help to thicken the consistency of the stool while others relax the bowel. By relaxing the bowel, stool stays in the large intestine longer. The large intestine is responsible for absorbing water from the stool and preventing dehydration due to loose stools. By slowing down the transit time within the bowel, diarrhea is relieved and energy loss which occurs due to dehydration is lessoned.

Let’s take a look at some of the best herbs to use to stop diarrhea.

Blackberry Root – the First line of Defense against Diarrhea

The first herb that I reach for if diarrhea occurs is blackberry root. If the root is not available, I use the leaves but they are not as strong. Blackberry is an interesting plant. Blackberries are rich sources of fiber and vitamins. The fruit prevents constipation, while the root and leaves relieve diarrhea. Blackberry roots and leaves are suitable for treatment of loose stools, regardless of the cause. They may be used for all ages, including babies and the elderly. I prefer to use the tincture but it can be difficult to locate for purchase.

Instead you may make a standard decoction of the root. Boil 1 teaspoon of dried root or 1 tablespoon of fresh root for twenty minutes, covered. Strain. Adults should drink one fourth of a cup initially, followed by one eight of a cup after each loose stool.

If using the leaf, make an infusion instead. Pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried leaves or one tablespoon of fresh leaves. Cover, Let sit for twenty minutes. Strain out the herb. Drink one half cup of the tea initially, followed by one fourth of a cup after each loose stool.

If blackberry is unavailable, substitute raspberry leaf. It is not as strong; however, it is effective in the treatment of loose stools. Raspberry is especially useful for children with diarrhea.

Mom Said “Have a Cup of Tea”

Mom was right! Many people are familiar with the practice of drinking black tea to stop loose stools. Black tea is rich in tannins. Tannins have astringent actions which dry up the stool and tone the lining of the bowel. Green tea may be used, but black tea contains higher concentration of tannins, hence it is more effective. A little sweetener may be added to tea; however, do not add milk or creamer as the fats in dairy and dairy substitutes may worsen the diarrhea.
