Check Out Your Spice Rack for Help Controlling Loose Stools

A recent Chinese study evaluated the use of stir fried white pepper in children under the age of two and one half years old. The study was conducted in an emergency department of a hospital. Children with acute and chronic loose stools were treated. The researchers determined that stir fried white pepper consistently relieved the condition and concluded that white pepper is safe for use in infants and toddlers.

Cinnamon is one of the most effective agents used to eliminate salmonella, a serious illness characterized by infectious diarrhea. Multiple studies have revealed that cinnamon destroys the organism responsible for the disease. Cinnamon has antibacterial and antiviral effects. It also helps to relieve nausea, which often accompanies loose stools. Cinnamon has protective effects upon irritated tissues of the digestive tract. It is readily available, inexpensive, and well tolerated. Try making a decoction as described above. Better yet, make a cup of black tea and add a teaspoon of cinnamon to it.

Add Bulk to Stop Diarrhea

Herbs can add bulk to the stool. They absorb water and thicken the stool. The result is less frequent diarrhea and improved consistency of the stools. Bulk herbs are mucilaginous, and soothing to inflamed digestive tract tissues. Most are very palatable.

My favorite bulk herb is slippery elm. Marshmallow root is a good substitute but does not have as good a flavor. Slippery elm is mildly sweet, making it perfect for children. Simply add water to powdered slippery elm. It should be made into a gruel-like consistency. Slippery elm may be prepared and used immediately. The herbal food may be eaten by spoonfuls throughout the day.

Marshmallow root may be made into a tea by pouring room temperature water over the root following the instructions given above for a standard infusion. However, it may take several hours for the marshmallow tea to “brew” rather than just twenty minutes.

Slippery elm and marshmallow root provide nutrients and prevent dehydration. If you use slippery elm, only purchase the organic powder as it is an at-risk plant.

Diarrhea can be effectively controlled with herbs. Unlike many pharmaceuticals which may stop diarrhea, only to result in constipation, herbs work with your body to promote healing and restore health.
