These symptoms can usually be remedied quickly by adjusting diet, staying hydrated and getting adequate sleep. There are also a few foods to avoid when dealing with diarrhea, while keeping up the nutritional needs of a pregnancy.

It only makes sense that if your digestive system is extra-sensitive, feeding it foods that are spicy, greasy or have laxative qualities like prunes are a no-no. Instead, use your mama’s intuition and serve yourself foods that you would feed your baby such as applesauce, crackers or bananas. Bland, easily digestible foods will treat your digestive tract gently, allowing you to absorb necessary nutrients for baby.

Remember to eat slowly and take little bites, just as you would feed a baby. Try to eat smaller portions more frequently throughout the day and allow time between meals for your body to digest. Perhaps you can even sneak in a nap?


Hydration and Relaxation

If you are suffering from diarrhea during your pregnancy, your body is putting itself to the limit and losing precious reserves of nutrients and water through loose, watery stools. It is crucial to replace that water, and give yourself adequate amounts of rest to allow the body to heal.

When you’re sick, be sure to only drink warm liquids, as cold beverages can be very shocking to the system and impede nutrient absorption. Warm herbal teas and ginger infusions are excellent for promoting calm, relaxation and proper digestion.

Even though you may feel like you have a hundred things to take care of before the baby arrives, don’t forget that the most important of those things is you. If you are not well nourished and properly rested, the baby will be negatively affected as well. Be sure to take short breaks throughout the day and go to bed as early as possible, especially when healing from illness.
