Learn The Health Benefits Of Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is a swamp plant that is found in South East Asia and some parts of South Africa. It is a member of the parsley family.

Sometimes, it is confused with the kola nut, but these two are not related. Kola nut has caffeine in it but gotu kola doesn’t contain caffeine or stimulants.

It has traditionally been used to heal various ailments and gotu kola is still a central part of Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese medicine. Historically, the health benefits of gotu kola have been related to clarity of mind and the healing of wounds.

There are many different ways to use gotu kola. Most health stores have this herb in capsule and tea forms. You can also find ointments to use gotu kola externally on your skin.

Benefits on your skin

Gotu kola has been found to be great to help heal various skin conditions. The benefits of gotu kola on your skin come from the great antioxidants it contains. These are chemicals called saponins or triterpenoids. These are beneficial to various skin conditions because they exert antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic qualities.

A study in 1979 published in Annals of Plastic Surgery found that gotu kola helps to prevent scar formation. Another study published in the International Journal of Low Extreme Wounds in 2003 found gotu kola helpful in healing wounds and skin lesions effectively. The saponins or triterpenoids help the skin to stay clean and they also help to strengthen the skin. This means the benefits of gotu kola extend to helping skin conditions like psoriasis, acne and eczema. It can also be used to help minor burns or prevent stretch marks, for example during pregnancy.

Benefits for varicose veins and venous insufficiency

Gotu kola is very beneficial also because of its tendency to increase blood circulation. The active chemicals of triterpenoids or saponins consist of two acids called asiaticoside and madecassoside, which are great in preventing, delaying and treating chronic venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency means that blood vessels lose their elasticity, blood pools in the legs and fluids leak out of the blood vessels – this can cause the legs to swell.
