Natural Sunburn Remedies – Try These Herbs And Herbal Treatments

Are you seeking herbal sunburn remedies to give you relief from the pain and itching?

These herbs could help as part of your natural home treatment.

Plantain for Sunburn

There are many species of plantain used for treating sunburn. Plantain’s healing benefits have been documented for over six hundred years. It is a common garden weed in many locales. Plantain contains vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. It is a good source of calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc, and copper. Plantain is useful for several other maladies as well.

I use plantain to relieve sunburn because it is readily available, often free for the picking, and it works. Plantain relieves swelling and inflammation due to too much sun. Hence it relieves the pain of sunburn. It is a demulcent, soothing and moisturizing, herb, which cools and protects sun-fried skin. Plantain’s vulnerary actions promote healing and aid in growth of new healthy tissues if the sunburn is accompanied by peeling. Vulnerary herbs reduce the heat and redness of the burn.

Plantain is most effective when used internally and externally simultaneously. If you are in the field and do not have access to a prepared remedy, simply chew up some plantain leaf and apply it directly to the burned area. You may do this for bruises and stings too.

I find the taste of plantain rather bitter, so I prefer the tincture to teas, although the tea can be prepared rapidly. Many people do not think that the leaves taste bad. You may take some of the tea and soak soft cloths in it. Place the cloths in a refrigerator and then apply them to the sunburn for cooling relief. Some people even let the cloths freeze and apply them as ice packs but I think that is too traumatic for skin which has already been injured.

Topical Sunburn Remedy Recipe

Here is an alternative recipe that may be made into ice cubes and stored in the freezer for use if sunburn occurs.

Combine fresh plantain leaves with St John’s wort flowers and chickweed. Vary the ingredients and amounts depending upon what herbs are available. If you gathered them from your yard, be sure that no pesticides or chemical fertilizers have been used.

Place the herbs in a blender. Cover them with apple cider vinegar. Blend all of the ingredients together. Measure the amount of the blend which you have created. Add an equal amount of aloe vera gel. Stir.
