Naturally Managing High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy

Eat That

It’s one of the oldest cliches – pregnant women and their food cravings. While certainly there is nothing wrong with indulging in a mint-chocolate-chip-dill-pickle sundae, there are certain foods that you should either include or restrict in your diet.

Supporting your cardiovascular health through diet is a safe way to lower blood pressure and protect the health of your pregnancy. Watch your cravings carefully, and you may notice that they subside when you are nourishing yourself properly.

* Potassium – 200mg per day or just eat lots of bananas, avocadoes and cantaloupe

* Vitamin B complex – 100mg of each major B vitamin per day

* Sodium – 2000mg daily; reduce your salt intake by avoiding processed foods, but don’t eliminate salt from your diet completely

* Fiberadd more raw fruits, green leafy veggies, and brown rice to your meal plans and let the fiber work in your favor

* Protein – 80grams per day; limit red meat consumption though

Breathe It

Of course, the stress of carrying a baby shows up on emotional levels as well. Anxieties over providing for a child and preparing yourself for delivery can send your blood pressure through the roof. The best way to release these tensions is to schedule a little extra self care every day and let go of everyday worries.

* Breathing – practice even, deep inhalations and complete slow exhalations several times per day

* Meditation – make stillness a regular part of your lifestyle to reduce anxiety and melt tension; tune into the movement inside

* Lullaby – listen to some quiet music and relax in a quiet place

* Knitting – working on a simple project like baby booties can help you weave positivity into your pregnancy while reducing anxiety

* Journaling – writing down your feelings and fears makes them more manageable and less stressful

It goes without saying that the best advice for avoiding high blood pressure during pregnancy is to treat your body like a precious cocoon, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and tobacco of course. Don’t gain too much weight and be sure to consult with your health care provider before beginning a new health regimen during your pregnancy.

All of these activities can be effective stress reducers, and if you make them a part of your daily routine now, you will be more likely to take good care of yourself after the baby is born.
