Pes Anserine Bursitis – Don’t Settle For Less Than Complete Recovery

Pes anserine bursitis is inflammation of the bursa a few inches below your knee joint on the medial (inner) side.

How Does Someone Develop Pes Anserine Bursitis?

Runners are very susceptible to develop pes anserine bursitis because of improper running form. For example, if someone runs with their knee (s) or foot (feet) not pointing forward but instead pointing outward, this position is the perfect setup for developing bursitis in the knee.

Another condition that is a perfect setup for it is running up hills too often, increasing the miles one runs too rapidly, and not stretching enough before running. Hamstrings that are too tight are also a cause, as is a tear in the medial meniscus and previous history of arthritis.

Since this condition really can be prevented by proper ergonomic evaluation of the feet during running, the proper selection of shoes and insoles/orthotics for the shoes, and knowledge about what not to do during athletic training, it’s smart to evaluate your footwear every four months if you’re a runner.

Beat the Inflammation with An Anti-Inflammatory Protocol

Because pes anserine bursitis is an inflammatory condition, it makes sense to approach it from the standpoint of what you could do on your own to decrease inflammation. You can always eat an Anti-Inflammation Diet (one low in vegetable oils but high in omega 3 fats; one low in carbohydrates like sugars and processed foods but high in vegetables and protein foods), which will be very helpful. However, an Anti-Inflammation Diet won’t ever be enough.

You’ll need anti-inflammatory herbs, too. I always recommend cat’s claw, devil’s claw and curcumin to my patients, and to take them at a high dosage without being afraid of them. The addition of these supplements will exponentially multiply the effects of the Anti-Inflammatory Diet.

Rest and icing a joint that is affected by arthritis or bursitis is always standard protocol for pes anserine bursitis.

Nutrition is an Integral Part of Recovery

And of course, supplements such as food-grade diatomaceous earth at a dosage of two heaping tablespoons daily in water, milk, juice or protein shake will help build the connective tissue to be a lot stronger so it won’t be subject to breakdown. This alone can be enough to prevent a relapse. Bursitis types of conditions tend to relapse.

I like approaching most connective tissue conditions such as pes anserine bursitis or other types of bursitis with nutrition as a primary way to initiate recovery and healing for several reasons:
