Possible Cayenne Side Effects, Adverse Reactions and Contraindications

The University of Maryland warns that when ingested in excess, cayenne can cause irritation in your stomach. The WebMD website warns that it is possible that long-term use of large amounts of cayenne can lead to serious side effect of kidney or liver failure. It is best to add cayenne to your diet moderately and have short periods of non-use. If you have previous gastrointestinal problems, it is advised you consult a professional herbalist or health professional before use.

Situations when it is advised to avoid cayenne

There are some situations when health care specialists recommend you avoid cayenne pepper because of possible cayenne side effects. Jennifer Brett from the Acupuncture Institute for the University of Bridgeport recommends that because of its heat qualities, it is best to not use cayenne during cases of high fever. She also recommends against the use of cayenne if you have a history of rapid heart or if you sweat very easily. WebMD also warns against its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Cayenne increases the production of stomach acids, so avoid use if you have acidity problems. It can also increase bleeding, according to the University of Maryland’s Medical Centre, so you should stop using large quantities near surgery.

The most important thing to remember is to gradually get used to cayenne pepper. Test the cayenne side effects on a small area of your skin first and start eating it moderately. Increase the quantity when you feel that your body has gotten used to it. And if you do experience any cayenne side effects, refrain from using it for the time being and ask more about it from health specialists.
