Potential Contraindications, Adverse Reactions And Side Effects Of Wild Yam

Hormone-related conditions

Because of the chemical diosgenin, there can be negative side effects of wild yam with regard to some hormone-related health conditions. This means that if you have personal, or family, history of hormonal-related conditions like breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, uterine cancer and uterine fibroids, you may wish to exercise caution in the use of wild yam.

It is also not advised to use the supplement if you are already undergoing another hormonal therapy treatment through various medicines or other supplements. Wild yam can alter the effects of steroids and thus make the hormonal therapy less successful or enhance its negative side effects.

Protein S deficiency

People suffering from protein S deficiency have increased risk of clotting. According to WebMD, there is some concern that using wild yam might increase the risk of clot formation due to its estrogen-like qualities. One case reported a patient with protein S deficiency and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developing a clot in the retina three days after taking a combination product of wild yam, dong quai, red clover, and black cohosh. Thus, it may be advisable to avoid the use of wild yam if you suffer from protein S deficiency, because there are no conclusive studies that have disproved or proved the connection.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

It is advisable to stop taking the supplement if you are pregnant, as the potential side effects of wild yam could prove harmful to the fetus. There are also not enough conclusive studies looking into the side effects of wild yam during breastfeeding, and thus it is advisable to refrain from use during this period.
