Severe Sunburn – Common Symptoms And Natural Home Remedies

Apply tea or dairy

Tea has great tannic acids in it that will help with the inflammation and pain. An article published in 2002 in Mother Earth News said that these tannic acids and theobromines help with alleviating the burning sensation. There are also compounds called catechins in tea and they help to repair skin tissue. Green tea is especially good because of its high content of polyphenols – these chemicals help protect the skin against damage from ultraviolet radiation.

Another great soothing help is to apply some milk or yoghurt on to the area affected. Milk creates a protein filled protective layer on the damaged skin and alleviates the symptoms of serious sunburn effectively.

Take a cool shower or bath

You can treat the burning sensation and inflammation of severe sunburn by taking a cool shower and even bath. The important thing to remember is to not use any shampoo or dry the skin by rubbing it with a towel. Don’t make the temperature too cold as this might just enhance the symptoms.

For added pain and inflammation relief, add some vinegar into the bath water, or soak towels in vinegar and apply them to the affected areas. You can also add some oatmeal into the bathwater.

Remedies for blisters

If your skin develops blisters due to severe sunburn, there are some great home remedies that will help. As already mentioned, taking an oatmeal bath is especially helpful in treating blisters.

One other great help is to take a raw potato and make it into a paste by putting it into a blender. Adding this paste on top of the blisters will help the skin to cool off and receive important antioxidants. Another antiseptic paste to add on top of your blisters is turmeric paste. Turmeric also has great anti-inflammatory properties and will alleviate the pain effectively.
