Take Control Of Your Asthma – 3 Crucial Areas

Eliminate Allergy Triggers

It’s a tough world out there and if you suffer from asthma, you need to consider every aspect of your environment and do your best to keep your exposure to allergens low. Be especially mindful of the spaces you spend most of your time in – bedroom, office, living areas – and make them as immaculate as possible, free from dust, mold, dander and chemicals.

No furry pets – this is difficult for most animal lovers, but there are lots of pets who don’t contribute to asthma symptoms and several hypo-allergenic cat and dog breeds that will keep you breathing easy

No food additives, colorings – an often overlooked trigger but your body knows that these are dangerous; keep your food as pure as your environment so your body isn’t overwhelmed by what you consume every day

Air Control – invest in a quality HEPA air filter system for your bedroom and office space, keep windows closed on days when the air is dusty, smoky or polluted, rip out old carpets and clean fabrics thoroughly

If you manage the spaces you can control, your body will be more relaxed and capable of handling what you have to face in the outside world.

Take Some Zen Time

One of the biggest factors that contribute to asthma is emotional or psychological stress. When you are feeling stressed out, your body is constantly looking for potential threats. If you are overwhelmed by the events of your life, your body can go into attack mode instantly and provoke an asthma attack simply because it is interpreting everything as the enemy during stressful periods. I have seen many clients greatly reduce the frequency and severity of attacks by cultivating mindfulness techniques to combat stress.

Keep diary of symptoms – check in with your stress levels and track your asthma symptoms on a daily basis so you can understand what your triggers are and learn what works for you

Stress Less – we often escalate small problems into larger ones just because we’re overstressed in the first place, try to see things from a neutral perspective and realize that things aren’t usually as bad as they seem

Breathing exercises – establish a daily breathing practice to strengthen your body’s natural ability; simply inhale for five counts, hold for five, exhale for five counts and repeat

Even though you may feel powerless against an asthma attack, if you manage your stress levels well, you will be capable of dealing with what life throws at you, rather than reacting to it.

I encourage you to try these remedies in-between attacks, so that you will be able to rely on them when you are feeling symptoms coming on. You will find that you can reduce the severity of your asthma attacks, while needing traditional prescription medications less.
