The Cell Phones And Cancer Link

Several studies have been done and are ongoing to determine whether the use of cell phones increases a person’s risk of developing cancer.

Researchers are particularly interested in exploring links between cell phones and different types of cancer of the brain as well as head and neck cancers.

Questions arise regarding cell phone use and cancer because cell phones discharge a form of energy called radiofrequency energy. Radiofrequency energy is absorbed by the tissues of the body closest to where the cell phone is held.

Radiofrequency energy causes heating; however, the degree of heating is insufficient to raise the body’s temperature measurably. Within the body, heating is a side effect of inflammation. Chronic inflammation does increase the risk of several disease processes, including cancer development.

A study that gives me reason for concern revealed that blood sugar, glucose, was used up faster on the side of the brain closest to the side of the head where a cell phone was used than the other side of the brain. To me, whether that is due to radiation or other unknown processes, a link was established that a change occurred. While the change may be harmless and possibly linked to active listening or other factors, I believe that study indicates the need for intensive investigation.

It is well known that other kinds of radiation, such as x-rays, promote the development of cancer. The radiation from cell phones is a different kind of energy. However, since cell phones have not been widely available until the past twenty years or so, people simply do not know the effects that regular cell phone use has on a person’s body.

At this time, there is no hard evidence that links cell phones with cancer or any other effects on the tissues of the head, brain, nerves, muscles or neck. Multiple studies are ongoing, sometimes with conflicting results. Because cell phones are a relatively new technology, there are no studies which show the effects of cell phone use and cancer over several decades.

The degree of exposure to radiofrequency energy varies with length of call, how closely the phone is held to the head, type of telephone and kind of antennae which the phone possesses. Even the distance from a cell phone tower modifies the amount of radiofrequency energy exposure a person receives.

Let’s take a look at what the positions of leading research organizations are saying about cell phones and cancer.
