The Safe Way To Sinus Flush

If you’ve considered doing a sinus flush, but are unsure if you could actually do it, you’re not alone.

Although it looks counterintuitive, the ancient practice of sinus flushing can actually help keep you healthy and vibrant. Plus you can breathe more easily and fully. Seriously!

Your nose and sinus cavities are one of your body’s first lines of defense when it comes to fending off illness. The little hairs in your nose, called cilia, act like little Swiffer dusters, clinging to all the dirt, dander, smoke, smog and viral plague we encounter every day. Your body also produces a mucous lining in your nose and sinuses that help to sweep these invaders out of the nose that can build up, get crusty and well, you know, generally make it hard to breathe.

Plus, if you do have any little flu bugs hanging out in your sinuses, a saline flush can create an environment that is inhospitable for the growth of bacteria and viruses, helping to keep you healthy.

Many people, if not everyone, can benefit from performing a sinus flush regularly. If you suffer from dust, allergens, have a compromised immunity, respiratory illness, a viral infection like a cold or the flu, or if you just snore kinda loud, this could help you tremendously. The more efficient our breathing, the more energy we have, the better we sleep and less stressed we are.

What does it feel like?

If you’ve ever played in the big waves of the ocean, you already have an idea of what a Neti pot can do. Except a Neti pot is about a hundred times gentler, but a lot less fun. Basically, it feels like a combination of being underwater, then feeling refreshed and breathing better than ever. With just a little practice, you’ll enjoy the warm, soothing feeling of a sinus flush, and wonder how you ever got through your day without it.

What you need

There are a couple of choices for a sinus flushing system. Either a Neti pot or a nasal irrigator will do the job, so it’s up to you, but my instructions are for use with a traditional Neti pot.

* Neti pot or nasal irrigator
* fine sea salt (optional, only use when fighting infection, not for daily rinsing)
* warm water
* facial tissue

How to flush your sinuses safely

1. Fill Neti pot with water that is warm but not too hot; it should feel slightly warm coming out of the faucet. If using sea salt, add 1/8 teaspoon to the water and dissolve.

2. Holding the Neti pot in your right hand, position the spout just inside the right nostril; lower your head forward and tilt it to the left, allowing the water to run into the right nostril and then out the left nostril into the sink.
