What Causes Depression? The Nature Vs Nurture Argument

Continued research on depression more strongly throws up the link between a depressive mental state and specific objective imbalances and abnormalities in the body, especially in one’s brain, one’s immune system, as well as one’s endocrine system.

When it comes to the diagnosis of depression, the medical and psychiatric fields, as they so often do, have done their best to categorize and define dozens or perhaps hundreds of specific conditions, each with a whole slew of its own symptoms and characteristics as well as a long and complicated-sounding name. Often, we laymen can make no head or tail of the whole long list of disorders, syndromes, and diseases we are inundated with. This is often true in most fields of modern medicine today.

Just as no two persons are alike, no two cases of depression are exactly alike, and no two depressed persons will have experienced the exact same causative factors, nor exhibit the exact same symptoms. Similarly, no two cases of cancer, or diabetes, or arthritis, are exactly the same. What science and medicine do is to try and categorize groups of symptoms into conditions they call disorders or syndromes. In the broader scheme of things, when it comes to health, healing and wellness, all these mean little. As long as we restore balance and give the mind and body what they need, health and sanity normally resume.

The focus of this website is on providing help and information on remedies for depression. It is thus not in our interest to be overly technical on the various diagnoses, definitions, medical terms and such. There are plenty of websites, books and other resources out there which already provide such information.

Major depression, even without any form of intervention, usually passes on its own – the timeframe can be a few months, or up to two years. However, at times, it descends into a chronic state, or leaves behind some long-lasting effects. Another thing – the probability of recurrence is high, and some people even get hit by major depression many times in their lives.

What is very fortunate is that all types of depression can be prevented and effectively treated, whether with conventional medical treatments or more holistic and natural remedies. Here on Insights-on-Health.com, we are strong proponents of holistic and natural therapies which work with the mind and body in the journey towards recovery, without the possibility (or a much lower probability) of harmful and dangerous side effects. Although we also recognize that there is a time and a place for medical intervention, where it could be more effective or even necessary. That said, the priority should always be to support the body.
