What Is Royal Jelly? A Quick Summary

Royal jelly has been increasingly popularized in the media and American culture in the past few years. However, for many individuals, the question remains: what is royal jelly?

Royal jelly comes from honey bees and is created as nutrition for the larvae in the colony. Worker bees secrete royal jelly. In cultivation, special hives are created and stimulated to produce queen bees. Queen bees eat the royal jelly and secrete it in their cell, from which it is collected. Unlike worker bee cells, queen bee cells have a great deal of royal jelly stored; this is why typically only queen bee cells are used in harvesting royal jelly.

Generally, in a “good season”, approximately 500 g of royal jelly can be produced from one hive. Royal jelly is 60 to 70 percent water, 12 to 15 percent protein, 3 to 6 percent fat and 10 to 16 percent carbohydrates. Salts, vitamins, and amino acids comprise the remainder of the substance.

Royal jelly is thought to have mystical qualities. Because queen bees (unlike worker bees) consume royal jelly, many believe it is the reason why they are bigger, live longer, and are more fertile than all the other bees.

Royal jelly is used in some diseases and as part of treatment for a few disorders. It is also used in some beauty products. It is important to note that royal jelly has been known to cause serious allergic reactions in some people – ranging from hives to asthma to fatal anaphylaxis.

Royal jelly is thought by many people to have special properties and has even been featured in some fiction works detailing its supernatural qualities. Alternatively, scientific and medical communities have failed to identify any particular component of royal jelly that makes it “special.” Nonetheless, it has been extremely helpful to many people and indeed, is used as a treatment for a number of conditions, so it is certainly “worth a try” under the supervision of one’s health care practitioner.
