Natural Treatment For Bipolar Disorder – Try These Remedies
|
What do Abraham Lincoln, Marilyn Monroe, and Edgar Allen Poe have in common? They all suffered from symptoms of manic depression.
That’s right, bipolar disorder has affected every demographic, from the very famous to the extremely unfortunate with its devastating lows and glorious highs.
A person with bipolar disorder will experience emotional and psychological mood swings ranging from frenzied genius to deeply apathetic. It is difficult to maintain balance on these levels when there is no middle ground. Extreme periods of creativity can be instantly squashed by a devastation that seems to come from nowhere, and it is hard to recover.
See the Big Picture
For my clients who suffer from these opposite extremes, I recommend them to look at the highs, middles and lows they have been experiencing lately, and to look for people, situations, thoughts that are prevalent during these times.
Keep a journal – It may be useful to look for patterns in mood and behavior for several weeks to really see what needs to be adjusted
Change your perspective – Perhaps a simple fix like moving your desk near a window, or going for a walk at lunch can improve how you feel during the day.
Be honest with yourself – Consider each task or event and notice how you may be contributing to unhealthy patterns for yourself. Decide to set yourself up for success rather than participating in a destructive behavior.
Sometimes it is too difficult to assess these issues for yourself. Set up an appointment with a counselor or meet a trusted friend to discuss your behaviors and find solutions. You may find more success if you are accountable to another person.
Fix the Fight or Flight
One of the best healing tools you have is your breath. It is a fundamental signal to your physiology that you are OK. If you are breathing, everything else is a piece of cake. Breathing is something that we don’t need to think about, our body does it for us; however, when we are stressed out, our breathing becomes shallow, held, unsteady. It gives signals to our brain that we are in trouble, and when that happens, everything else goes haywire.
To promote peace and balance – Breathe deeply through your nose for four counts, hold your breath for four counts and exhale for four counts. Repeat up to one minute.
