Burdock root is another herbal bitter which improves the health of the digestive tract. Although burdock is classified as a bitter herb, it is actually quite mild tasting. I use burdock root extensively as it is generally well tolerated and offers health benefits for the entire body.

Licorice root makes an outstanding herbal tea. It has a sweet taste that helps to mask the taste of the more bitter herbs which may be needed to relieve constipation. Only DGL licorice root should be used if high blood pressure is a concern. Licorice root is a mild laxative. It relieves inflammation and pain of the digestive tract. Licorice root offers protective benefits to the tissues of the digestive tract as well as the liver. One of the greatest benefits of using licorice root is that it relieves spasms.

Barberry root is a mild laxative. It tones the digestive tract. Its a useful herb for elders and people with health issues as it possesses useful bowel cleansing effects without the discomfort which stronger laxatives often cause.

A stronger bitter herb is yellow dock. It may be made into a very effective tea; however, it tastes quite bitter.

Wahoo cleanses the colon and supports the health of the liver. Liver health is essential for proper bowel functioning.

Senna is often made into commercial laxatives. I always combine it with other herbs as senna is strong. It can cause cramping and even loose stools if too much is consumed.

While not an herb, but natural clay, bland tasting bentonite clay is a useful component of an herbal tea designed to detoxify the body. Bentonite clay absorbs toxins very well. It binds with them and hastens their elimination from the body. This ingredient is especially useful when detoxification is desired after exposure to X-rays, medical procedures or other toxins.

The Bottom Line – Colon Cleansing Teas

A healthy colon is essential for proper elimination of toxins throughout the entire body. Many natural remedies are available which promote healthy bowel function. Read product labels or consult with an herbalist to select blends which meet your specific needs. Beware of overpriced commercial colon cleansing teas which promise unrealistic results. Always use the gentlest herbs first. Reserve the stronger ones for occasional use only.
