Exploring The Bilberry Eye Health Benefits
|
As mentioned above, one bilberry eye health benefit is on macular degeneration. A book by Frank Murray called “100 Super Supplements for a Longer Life” identified bilberry as useful for preventing macular degeneration.
This condition occurs when the macula, which is the part of your eye that provides vision for clarity and detail, slowly breaks down. A 2005 study presented in the Journal of Advances in Gerontology concluded that bilberry is excellent in preventing macular degeneration. In the study, animals with the condition that consumed bilberry extract experienced complete prevention of impairment in the lenses and retina.
Retinopathy
Another bilberry eye health benefit is on the condition retinopathy. This is often related to other conditions, such as being a by-product of diabetes. Retinopathy damages the retina, which is the part of the eye that relays what is seen to the brain.
For instance, a 1987 study conducted by Professor Perossini found bilberry useful for improving diabetic retinopathy. In the study, 79% of patients taking bilberry extract twice a day experienced significant improvement to their condition. It is in fact prescribed in France for diabetic retinopathy because of the eye health benefits it has.
There are very little side effects of bilberry and it is thus great to use in your daily diet. If you do feel you are experiencing any severe reactions to eating bilberry, you should contact your healthcare provider and refrain from using it until you know what might have caused the adverse reactions.
Bilberries are very sweet and tasty and good to enjoy fresh. There are also various bilberry supplements available, for example extracts and capsules. Further, it is a great food item to use in baking and makes, for example, great jam. The various bilberry eye health benefits have earned it the nickname of ‘the vision fruit’ in Japan.
