How To Lower Cholesterol Naturally – A Holistic Perspective

Don’t Cut the Fat

There are many diets for lowering cholesterol out there, functioning on the premise that if you don’t eat cholesterol you won’t have high levels of cholesterol or develop heart disease. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case, as there is evidence that a high cholesterol diet can actually lower blood cholesterol levels.

There is something you should be cutting from your diet, however – simple sugars and carbohydrates. If there is too much sugar in your diet, the liver turns those sugars into a form of fat for long term storage. These fats, called triglycerides, can damage artery walls as they travel through the blood stream. As the damage becomes scar tissue, it causes the arteries to harden, leading to cardiovascular disease.

Rather than banning anything that contains cholesterol, as you need this building block for good health, focus on the following guidelines:

* Vitamin B complex – 100mg daily of major B vitamins, naturally lowers cholesterol
* Vitamin C – 1000mg daily – naturally lowers cholesterol
* Selenium – 200 mcg daily, deficiency has been linked to heart disease
* Cinnamon – use a supplement from a health food store rather than culinary spice
* Spirulina – use as directed, lowers blood sugar levels
* Fiber – more fruits, veggies and whole grains like oats can reduce cholesterol levels
* Carrot juice – helps to flush out fat from bile
* Less sugar – refined white sugar, simple carbohydrates and alcohol cause free radical damage
* No fried foods – causes oxidation of fats in body

While it goes without saying, I hope, that you should be aware of how much saturated fat you do consume, don’t think that fat intake is the only factor in cardiovascular disease. Use good judgment when making food choices and notice how you feel after a meal. Chances are, if you don’t feel energized and comfortable, you’ve overindulged on fat and sugars. I always advise my clients to strive for balance most of the time and then can go ahead and have that cheeseburger once in a while.
