What to do About the Itch

In addition to using tea tree oil, applying witch hazel extract helps to dry the lesions and relieve itching. Witch hazel is safe to use on mucus membranes and in the perineal area, as is diluted tea tree oil.

Calendula, chickweed, or St John’s wort infused oils and salves relieve itching and inflammation. You could apply a tincture of any of these herbs to lesions as well.

Tepid baths containing the herbs may be soothing as well. Combine one handful of herbs with one handful of oatmeal. Tie them up in a cloth and add to a lukewarm bath. Good herbs to put in the tub include chamomile, peppermint, calendula, chickweed, plantain, comfrey, figwort or cleavers.

Take herbal teas or tinctures internally as well. All of the herbs, suggested for baths, except comfrey, may be used.

Make compresses out of herbal teas which have been chilled. Apply them as desired to itchy areas.

Itchiness may lead to irritability. Teas or tinctures of nervine type herbs are valuable. Passionflower, skullcap, linden, red clover, calendula, lemon balm or chamomile may be helpful. Peppermint tea is one of the best for topical and internal relief.

Immune System Help

Echinacea may be used to enhance immune health. Shitake mushrooms are excellent as well. Herbal adaptogens are whole body tonics. Ashwagandha and eleuthero are outstanding. Except for echinacea, the immune supporting herbs may be used on a long term basis.

The Bottom Line – Scabies Treatments and Cures

Prompt identification is needed. Skin scrapings are sometimes used to confirm the diagnosis. Unfortunately, scrapings may not reveal any mites even if an infestation is present. You must treat your entire household if one individual is affected.
