In 2012, there was also a large review study that looked into 26 different studies that have researched the ability of garlic to lower cholesterol. This review, published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, looked into these studies and analyzed garlic’s effects on helping people with high fat levels in their blood.

The review concluded that, overall, garlic is able to help reduce cholesterol levels in the blood. It is beneficial to the reduction of triglyceride levels, meaning the fat levels, in the body as well.

They also found that garlic powder and garlic extract worked effectively in lowering the blood’s cholesterol levels, and that garlic oil was more beneficial to reducing the fat levels in the body. They recommended that garlic should be used for over 12 weeks in order to see long lasting results.

Even more recently, there has been research that keeps proving the ability of garlic to lower cholesterol. A University of Adelaide study published in Nutrition Reviews revealed that garlic can make a clinically significant reduction in blood cholesterol levels. Lead researcher Dr Karin Ried told the Australian News that “an 8 per cent reduction in total serum cholesterol is of clinical relevance and is associated with a 38 per cent reduction in risk of coronary events at 50 years of age”.

There are many different suggestions as to the amount of the herb you should use in order to receive the best benefits of garlic to lower cholesterol. Dr Murray recommends that you should get a minimum of 10mg allicin a day. In fresh garlic terms, this means around one to four cloves per day.
