Herbal Home Remedies For Bronchitis – Herbs To Take

Lungwort is a gentle herb which soothes inflamed tissues and helps to reduce the frequency of coughs. It is an expectorant that has astringent qualities which diminish swelling within the lungs. This makes breathing more effective, easier, and more comfortable.

Mullein is a common roadside weed in much of the northern hemisphere. It is a mild relaxant which helps to calm harsh dry coughs. The herb tones the immune and respiratory tracts. Mullein is an excellent herb to use for children suffering from bronchitis.

Echinacea helps the body to resist the effects of viral and bacterial infections. It must be implemented when symptoms are just beginning for it to be most effective. Echinacea should only be used for short periods of time, such as for the duration of acute bronchitis.

Elecampane root effectively relieves wet mucussy coughs. It works well when combined with echinacea. It is one of the first herbs I reach for when someone has bronchitis. Elecampane has astringent, tonic and antibacterial properties. The herb helps the body become more resistant to the development of secondary bacterial infections which sometimes occur when a person is weakened due to bronchitis. For this reason, it may be useful to people who suffer from chronic bronchitis during acute flare-ups.

These are just a few of the many herbs available which prevent and treat bronchitis. The herbs may be used in whatever form is most convenient for you. I usually recommend teas and tinctures. Alcohol free glycerites are available for children and others who wish to avoid alcohol. Herbal pills, syrups, and capsules may be used too. Syrups are especially useful for quieting hacking coughs accompanied by dry throats.

Bronchitis must be treated quickly. The cough may linger for a few weeks after other symptoms subside. See your health care provider for diagnosis and if you have questions.
