Herbal Home Remedies For Hangovers – Herbs To Make You Feel Better

If ginger is not appealing, make a cup of strong mint tea. Drink it at whatever temperature is most appealing. Often, room temperature is best. It combines well with black or green teas. Peppermint is the most potent mint. I recommend that you use it double strength. If using tea bags, use two per cup. If using the dried herb, place two teaspoons of dried peppermint in a cup. Add one cup of boiling water. Strain out the herb and drink the tea.

If fresh mint is available, either eat a few leaves or make a strong tea using two tablespoonfuls of fresh leaves. Be sure to chop or crush the fresh leaves before brewing the tea.

If the digestive tract is very irritated and burning, slippery elm or marshmallow root are good choices. They provide a soothing barrier between stomach acid and inflamed tissues.

Liver Healing Herbs

To protect the liver, consume herbs which enhance hepatic health. Milk thistle seed is very protective of the liver. Burdock root and dandelion root work well too. If you indulge in drinking alcohol on a regular basis, you should consume these herbs at least daily. Other herbs which aid the liver are barberry root and Oregon grape root. I do not recommend the use of goldenseal, because while effective, it is an endangered plant which has been overused. It is best used for serious ills.

Contrary to what the advertising world would like us to believe, there is no herbal “cure” which rids the body of alcohol and other substances rapidly so it doesn’t show up on a urine test. Passage of time and lots of fluids are required. Although herbs cannot rid the body of traces of alcohol, they are very effective at relieving distress due to a hangover.
