Soothing Home Remedies For Ear Infection

Treatments

No matter what you may do to prevent infection, the reality is that everyone gets sick from time to time. When your child wakes up in the middle of the night with red, tender ears, be ready to soothe and treat the infection naturally at home, saving an expensive and often unnecessary trip to the emergency room.

* Garlic Oil – chop several cloves of garlic and simmer in olive or almond oil for 15 minutes; strain. Massage the warm oil gently into the soles of the feet and cover with soft cotton socks. Repeat 3x per day until infection clears.

* Mullein Oil – gently warm the oil and using a dropper, let 3 to 5 drops of oil (not droppers-full) into the ear canal and cover with a cotton ball several times per day to soothe inflammation and fight infection.

* Warm Compress – wrap a hot steamy towel in a dry cloth after applying mullein oil described above and lay towels over infected ear; rest for 20 minutes. Repeat several times per day to reduce swelling and ease pain.

It may not be necessary to call your doctor over an ear infection unless severe symptoms such as cough or runny nose with ear pain for more than 48 hours persist, or if your child has a fever over 102 degrees. Otherwise, gentle home remedies may be all that is needed for your child’s immune system to deal with the infection on its own. Besides, most of the time, these medications don’t provide treatment any faster than the body would naturally take to recover on its own.

When your body is supported so that it can fight off infection properly, the chance of recurrent ear infections is less likely, but when antibiotics are overused, long-term problems can arise. Use your best judgment about when to use prescriptions, and when a warm towel, nourishing foods and a nap with mom are the best medicine.
