Top Gout Causing Foods To Avoid

Vegetables

While I wouldn’t lose any sleep over not eating cauliflower, the thought of giving up mushrooms is more devastating to me. Vegetables are certainly less likely to cause gout than meats, but if you are suffering from chronic flare-ups, leave these off the menu until your symptoms improve.

* Cauliflower
* Cooked spinach
* Beans and legumes
* Lentils
* Peas
* Asparagus
* Mushrooms
* Peanuts

Don’t think that you can just get out of eating your veggies, though. There are plenty of leafy greens, celery and broccoli out there for all of us, and they can cut uric acid levels too.

The Good Stuff

No one wants to be told that they can’t have pizza and beer. That would be like saying you can’t celebrate your birthday. However, if you reserve these items only for special occasions, rather than making them part of your everyday diet, you can have your cake and eat it too.

* Brewer’s yeast – Alcohol, beer, wine
* Baker’s yeast – White sugar and refined flour often are combined with this
* Fried foods (destroy vitamin E and release uric acid)

When you are suffering from a gout attack, and can’t walk because of the pain, you will wish you hadn’t indulged so much. A lifetime of consuming these items will take time to undo, so be diligent and give yourself time before re-introducing these.

If you still don’t want to believe that diet is directly related to gout, allow me to share an expert opinion. One of my massage students wanted to work on a client with gout, and when I consulted with another therapist who has over twenty years of experience, her first words were “Gout is a dietary issue, and massage won’t help much until they change how they eat.” I trust her professional experience with this.

The bottom line is that you will have significant reduction in frequency and intensity of gout pain if you are watching your food choices. Then reward yourself with foods that can help eliminate symptoms of gout – your joints will thank you.
