Acid Reflux Diets – Foods To Eat And Foods To Avoid In Combating Heartburn

Acid reflux is a digestive disorder where painful burning feelings rise from the stomach. It is often also referred to as heartburn, because of the feeling it creates in the body. It can be just a temporary problem but can also be a chronic condition.

The most important thing in helping reduce this condition is to consider an acid reflux diet. This includes removing some of the common heartburn causing foods from your diet, and adding good soothing foods into it.

Suffering from acid reflux doesn’t mean you can’t eat good foods anymore; there are lots of good foods available for consumption. Removing the following food items from your diet and adding the proposed ones in their place, you can get quick relief from acid reflux and live life to the fullest.

Acid reflux diet – beverages to avoid

There are certain beverages that you need to avoid if you experience acid reflux. The main beverages to stay away from are:

* Caffeinated drinks such as coffee and caffeine-containing teas. The problem with caffeine is mostly the excess consumption of it; a cup a day won’t cause too much issue with acid reflux.

* Carbonated beverages such as sodas. This is because carbonates expand in your stomach and cause increased pressure which will result in acid reflux.

* Alcoholic beverages. Even though alcoholic drinks are not often acidic, alcohol causes the valve at the bottom of the oesophagus to relax and this will cause acid reflux.

Acid reflux diet – foods to avoid

On top of beverages, there are certain foods that have been found to cause acid reflux and you should remove them from your diet too. The problem with the following foods is often the relaxing of the valve at the oesophagus that will lead to acid reflux. These include:

* Fatty foods. Foods that contain high amounts of fats will increase your probability of suffering from heartburn. These include high-fat meats like pork, lamb and beef. There are also some dairy products that have high-fat content, such as cheese, cream and some high-fat butter.

* Fried foods. Fried foods, such as fries and many battered products like nuggets, are most often associated with causing heartburn and should be removed from your acid reflux diet.

* Acidic and citrus foods. Oranges and lemons, for example, are very acidic and will increase the risk of suffering from acid reflux. Tomatoes are also very acidic and thus should be avoided in all forms.

* Chocolate. Unfortunately for many, it seems that chocolate often causes acid reflux too. This is both because of the high fat content and the caffeine content of chocolate.
