Coffee And Diabetes – The Connection Is Very Interesting

What About Coffee and Kidney Function?

The connection between coffee and diabetes should also take into consideration the impact on the kidneys. In a Korean study, scientists evaluated this, knowing and understanding the relationship between kidney disease and diabetes in the later stages of diabetes. They examined the relationship between coffee and kidney disease in 2673 women between the ages of 35 and 84 years old. The women were categorized according to how much coffee they drank – less than one cup a day, 1 cup a day, and 2 or more cups per day.

The scientists found that if a woman did not have diabetes, coffee consumption decreased her risk of developing kidney disease. However, if a woman was diabetic, then drinking 2 or more cups a day of coffee lowered her risk of developing kidney disease, compared to those who drank less than one cup a day.

What’s Really in Coffee That Matters for Your Health

So what’s in coffee that could be contributing to its good or bad qualities? Coffee contains compounds called polyphenols, which are antioxidants. The antioxidants are thought to answer the question of how coffee can improve a person’s health.

When scientists tested the metabolic pathways of coffee drinkers, they found that some of the metabolites included dihydroferulic acid, feruloylglycine, dihydroferulic acid sulfate, which are derivatives from a compound called chlorogenic acid. Some of these have already been found to act as antioxidants and have the ability to intervene in inflammation while also protecting the brain.

Still have a question about the connection between coffee and diabetes? Switch to tea. Tea also has high levels of polyphenols and green tea – the type of tea that is minimally processed – is connected to lowered risks for diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and obesity especially visceral obesity (the type where the fat is primarily around the middle).
