Effective Natural Remedies For Yeast Infection In Women

It is estimated that at any given time, approximately one-fourth of women can be suffering from a yeast infection. They are caused by an overgrowth of fungus in the vagina, and can be quite uncomfortable.

While a yeast infection is not a serious condition, most women want an effective remedy to clear them up fast, and prevent recurrence.

Since yeast infections are caused by micro-organisms, it makes sense to kill as many of these unpleasant critters as possible. However, those organisms are just a few of many that live in the vagina. In addition to Candida albicans, known to cause yeast infections, a “good” bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus also is a natural component of the vaginal canal.

Yeast infections commonly occur whenever there’s a sudden upset in the balance of these microorganisms. Such an imbalance can be triggered by diabetes, diet, antibiotic or hormone use, vaginal lotions and douches or stress. Women are also vulnerable to yeast infections during menstruation, when the hot, moist environment provides a warm home for this fungus, and pregnancy, due to hormonal changes.

Treating a yeast infection requires more than just the topical creams available in drug stores. Reducing dietary causes and consistent use of anti-fungal treatments can significantly relieve symptoms. For non-serious infections, the following natural remedies can help to reduce recurrence by strengthening your body’s own resistance.

Herbal Douche

While both commercial and herbal douches are effective in fighting infections, herbal douches can also support and regenerate tissue. Proper care of the vaginal tissues without being too harsh is the best way to help clear a yeast infection.

Gather up:
* 1 tsp calendula leaves
* 1 tsp goldenseal
* 1 tsp yarrow

Blend together in a small bowl and add one quart of hot water to cover; steep for ten minutes, strain and cool.

Mix in:
* 10 drops tea tree oil
* 8 drops oregano oil
* 5 drops lavender oil

Use as a douche every other day during infections for best results.

Anti-fungal Diet

A diet high in sugar and simple carbohydrates creates optimal conditions for fungi, which can easily multiply in a sugary environment. Avoid fruits, sweets, breads, pasta, cheese, sugar and all products made with yeast until the infection has healed. Restrict your intake of alcohol, fermented foods and starches indefinitely if you are prone to recurring yeast infections. In addition, add low-fat yogurt or kefir to your diet or take an acidophilus supplement to balance intestinal flora and fight infection.
