Herbs For Digestion Problems And Digestive Health

Add 1 tablespoon of powdered slippery elm per cup of water to ease heartburn. The remedy has a thick consistency which immediately coats and soothes inflamed tissues. The remedy is sweet and nutrient rich. Slippery elm is helpful to use if prolonged vomiting secondary to stomach flu has resulted in minor dehydration or exhaustion. Since slippery elm provides bulk, it promotes the formation of a soft stool if diarrhea is present and it relieves constipation as well.

Aloe gel or juice may be purchased at grocery and health food stores. It provides cool soothing relief of acid excess or reflux. I prefer the gel to the juice.

Marshmallow root promotes the healing of inflamed tissues and soothes pain. Unlike most herbal teas, when making an infusion of marshmallow root, it is best made by using the cold infusion method. Pour one quart of cool water over 6 teaspoons of marshmallow root. Place it, covered, in the refrigerator overnight. Strain the teas and drink it throughout the day. Marshmallow is an excellent alternative to the more expensive, rarer slippery elm herb.

Dandelions are bitters which improve the tone of the digestive tract. They improve the flow of bile which improves the health of the gallbladder and the liver. A healthy bile flow is also needed to prevent the formation of excess blood vessel clogging cholesterol.
