* Vitamin C may be taken as part of a multivitamin complex. During flare ups, extra vitamin C may be beneficial. Experts recommend between 3,000-20,000 total milligrams daily for acute allergic flare-ups. Excess vitamin C is eliminated in the urine so it is non toxic. If too much vitamin C is taken, loose stools will result. Some health care providers consider this to be healing. In any case, reduce the amount of vitamin C if loose stools occur. Vitamin C prevents secondary infections and promotes healing of irritated tissue. It reduces the allergic reaction and aids the immune system. Vitamin C may help make the body less sensitive to allergic substances.

* Vitamin E aids immune health. Between 400 to 800 IU daily is recommended.

* Zinc helps to prevent secondary infections. Between 50 and 80 milligrams per day is commonly suggested.

* Calcium – 1500 milligrams daily calms the inflammatory response.

* Magnesium is needed for calcium to work effectively. It too has a calming action on the allergic response.

Proteolytic enzymes and acidophilus improve the health of the digestive tract where much of the immune system is based. Only adults should use proteolytic enzymes. Label directions vary with manufacturers.

Borage seed oil, evening primrose oil, and black currant seed oil are among the most important supplements used to reduce allergic reactions. They are taken on a regular basis to prevent reactions. During allergic responses, these specialty oils relieve many symptoms. They decrease the production of prostaglandins which are responsible for much of the discomfort allergy sufferers endure. The oils reduce inflammation, and nourish the adrenal glands.

Consuming local raw bee pollen on a regular basis is one of the most effective ways that people can reduce airborne allergies such as hay fever. Begin well in advance of the season that you suffer from seasonal allergies. Start by consuming just a grain or two of the pollen on a daily basis. Gradually increase to two teaspoons daily. Discontinue use if you have a reaction to the pollen such as hives, rash, or respiratory symptoms of allergy. Contact local beekeepers for the best pollen.

Natural supplements have much to offer allergy sufferers. Most of these products may be used instead of or in addition to conventional medications and herbs. Always check with your health care provider prior to implementing supplements, especially if you are on medications.
