How to Make St John’s wort Oil

St John’s wort oil is my favorite herbal oil to make. It is so pretty and useful! Simply gather unopened flower buds and freshly opened flowers in the late morning on a hot summer day. That is when the essential oil content is highest and the morning dew has time to evaporate.

Place the flowers on a cloth or screen for one half hour. This allows time for excess moisture within the flowers to evaporate and gives tiny insects a chance to depart. Excess moisture can cause herbal oils to spoil.

Pack the flowers in a clean canning jar. Pour olive oil over the herbs by a depth of one inch over the flowers. Cover and shake well.

Place the jar in a sunny window. Shake it at least twice daily for two weeks. Add additional oil if needed.

At the end of two weeks, squeeze the oil through several layers of cheesecloth. The remaining oil is ready to use as is or may be made into a salve.

I like my St John’s wort oil to be very strong so I try to make it early in summer. When the first batch is ready, I use it as the base for future batches instead of olive oil. I add more fresh flowers and repeat the above procedure for making the oil. Sometimes I am able to repeat the process often enough to make a dark red, triple strength oil.

Store your oil in a cool dark place. Apply it as often as desired for shingles relief.

The Bottom Line – Cure for Shingles

The pain of shingles may require prescription painkillers. Herbs may help to reduce the need for them. They offer healing support which prescription drugs do not afford. Use herbal remedies as part of a well rounded plan to help you cope with this agonizing condition.
