Severe Sunburn – Common Symptoms And Natural Home Remedies

Sometimes, we enjoy sunlight too much, especially after a long and cold winter season. It is easy to forget to cover the skin or apply enough sun protective creams during a busy and fun day outside in the sunshine.

But too much sunshine or sunbed can cause you to develop serious problems that won’t always show up until a few hours later.

Severe sunburn is sometimes even referred to as sun poisoning because of the symptoms that are very similar to some actual poisonings. The symptoms of severe sunburn listed on the WebMD website include:

* Skin redness and blistering
* Pain and tingling
* Swelling
* Headache
* Fever and chills
* Nausea
* Dizziness
* Dehydration

Luckily, there are some great home remedies for severe sunburn you could use.

Drink enough liquids

First and foremost, it is essential that you make sure you are sufficiently hydrated if you suffer from severe sunburn. Sunburn is a dehydrating condition and thus you need to keep drinking a lot of water to make sure you stay hydrated. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, but you should aim for a bit more for a few days after the sunburn has appeared. Drinking water will also alleviate the headache and nausea you might experience.

Apply gel or moisturizer

A great remedy for severe sunburn is to apply for example aloe vera oil or gel to the affected area. Aloe vera is a traditional remedy used for treating sunburns. You can also apply a vitamin E gel to the affected area.

An animal study published in 1993 in the Journal of Scanning Microscopy found that applying a common vitamin E supplement to a severe sunburn immediately afterwards helps to decrease the damage. Coconut oil is also beneficial to bad sunburns because it helps with the inflammation and re-growth of skin tissue.
