Using Home Remedies For Nausea To Obtain Effective Relief

Scent and Nausea

Scents, especially strong cloying scents and potent food odors, often precipitate nausea. Scents can help to relieve nausea too. Essential oils of sweet orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, or tangerine can reduce feelings of nausea. If the essential oils are unavailable, simply keep a piece of freshly peeled fruit at the bedside. Do not forget the age old practice of getting fresh air into the sick room. If possible, keep a window open or even sit outside briefly unless the weather precludes it.

Warm or Cool – Which is Best?

Warmth or coolness may diminish or precipitate nausea. If a fever is present or vomiting occurs, applying cool packs to the back of the neck may be helpful.

On the other hand, if nausea is accompanied by abdominal cramps, try placing a carefully wrapped hot water bottle against the abdomen or lower back.

Just like you need to listen to your body’s signals when determining what to eat or drink, use your intuition to determine whether heat or cold is best for you.

Do not apply heat or cold to elders, young children or people who are unable to perceive if the packs are too warm or too cold.

Lying on the left side with your knees bent may offer relief as well. Avoid making rapid changes in position to avoid nausea.

The Bottom Line – Home Remedies for Nausea

Home remedies are an essential part of a treatment plan for nausea. Even if conventional treatments are utilized, home remedies are valuable.

You probably know some home remedies which have been practiced in your family for years.

My sister swears by coke syrup. It’s the stuff that is used to make fountain drinks. It can be obtained from pharmacists. We first used that remedy when my sister was carsick many years ago. A pharmacist recommended it. It works great for my sister, but just the thought of consuming coke syrup makes me feel nauseated! Give me some crackers and hot spicy soup!

The true bottom line for effective treatment of nausea is a combination of common sense; trial and error; and intuition. Give home remedies a try. They can be very effective.
