Tips For Battling Weight Gain During Menopause

Exercise Diversity

There is no question that consistent exercise is a must-do when battling weight gain during menopause. Dieting alone will not be sufficient in reducing the pounds you have been carrying for decades (yikes) and daily movement will support your joints, bones and heart as well.

Switch It Up – keep your exercise routine fresh and interesting by switching your walking route, rotating activities or getting a new workout buddy

Stretch It Out – do a little yoga or simple stretching every day to keep joints flexible and reduce stress

Weigh It Down – lifting weights boosts metabolism while increasing your body’s ability to burn calories more efficiently

Creating an exercise plan that you look forward to every day is the key to sticking with it. Keep an exercise log, and reward yourself when you reach new goals with an indulgent treat like a pedicure or massage.

Drink to your Health

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep your body slim. It flushes toxins, reduces bloating and helps you feel full all at once. Drinking more water and less of other liquids will not only help you lose weight, but will reduce menopause symptoms overall.

Stay Hydrated – aim to drink 80oz of water daily with a little lemon if you like; this should be your go-to drink before any other liquid

Avoid Alcohol – the sugar and calories in alcohol combined with the poor food choices that often accompany adult beverages can add up to extra pounds

Nothing Artificial – ditch the soda and diet drinks that can increase cravings for sugar

When your body is nourished with liquid instead of having to process the alcohol and sugars contained in many beverages, your menopause symptoms will decrease along with your waistline. That’s a win-win situation for sure.

My grandmother reversed years of bad eating habits by losing over 60 pounds during her menopausal years. She was tired of carrying around extra weight and was urged by her doctor to make a change – she has kept it off for almost 30 years. If she can do it, anyone can.

If you want to enjoy your golden years rather than suffer through them, managing your weight through healthy diet and exercise must become a priority as menopause approaches. Remember that the lifestyle changes that you implement now can determine the state of your health for the rest of your life.
